Collegiate High School National Challenge Trust

Collegiate High School became a Foundation School with a Charitable (Raising Aspirations) Trust in August 2008.

Following the examination results of August 2009, the Governing Body believed that if no action was taken standards would improve, but not at a rate at which they would like or the National Challenge programme expects.  A Statutory proposal to change the Instrument of Government in accordance with section 18 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 was submitted in January 2010.  The proposed alteration was to acquire a majority of Foundation Governors on the Governing Body with a planned implementation date of 1 April 2010.  Consultation on the Proposal was carried out between 25 January and 23 February 2010.  The Governing Body considered the responses from the consultation at a meeting on 25 February 2010 and the decision was made to change the Instrument of Government to meet the requirements of the DCSF National Challenge programme.

The Trust Partners and the Governing Body of Collegiate High School believe that this Proposal will contribute to and improve the diversity of school provision in the area, creating a new structure for the School aimed at raising standards.  The School and Trust will still be part of the Local Authority’s family of maintained schools.  The appointment of Foundation Governors has already brought a variety of skills and experience to the Governing Body and the school has benefitted accordingly.  The appointment of a majority of Governors further strengthens the role of the Trust, which is a forum for developing expertise which will be carried through to the Governing Body.

The Governing Body continues to have day to day control of the land and assets of the school and continues to be responsible for the performance of the school.  As a self governing Foundation School Collegiate benefits from increased financial and management autonomy, building on the strengths of local management and the expertise of the Governing Body.  The Trust Partners are:

  • Blackpool Sixth Form College
  • Blackpool and The Fylde College
  • Blackpool NHS Trust
  • University of Cumbria
  • Blackpool Council
  • Boundary Primary School

Nominated Trustees are:

  • John Boyle, Chair of Governors, Blackpool Sixth Form College (Chair)
  • Felicity Greeves, Principal of Blackpool Sixth Form College
  • Pauline Waterhouse, Principal of Blackpool and The Fylde College
  • Delyth Baxendale, Assistant Director, Blackpool NHS Trust
  • Ruth Colman, School Liaison, University of Cumbria
  • Susan Harrison, Assistant Director, Children & Young People’s Department, Blackpool Council
  • Dayle Harrison, Headteacher, Boundary Primary School

Margaret Beaumont, Business Manager of Collegiate High School, continues in the role of Company Secretary of the Trust.

The Trust appoints a majority (eight) of the Governors to the School’s Governing Body, which is made up as follows:

  • Eight members appointed by the Trust
  • One third Parent Governors, elected on the basis of their expertise
  • Two members of staff (one being the Headteacher)
  • One appointed by the Local Authority
  • One appointed from the local community

A Parent Council will be established in accordance with Section 23A Education Act 2002 to represent views of parents of pupils registered at the School.

caring, and forward-looking community.

Vision

Our students will be happy, safe and successful; each having a love of learning and entrepreneurial spirit. They will be self-aware, know where they are going and what needs to be done to get there. They will try a broad range of things, hold positions of responsibility, serve the community and be proud of their achievements and of the School.

Our inclusive and forward looking curriculum will meet the needs of current and future students. It will sell the School, educate the whole person, be broad and balanced and cater for both the specialist and generalist.

Teaching is exciting, relevant and interesting underpinned by high expectations and consistent practice. Learning is individual, co-operative and characterised by excellent relationships between students and with staff. A strong focus on literacy provides equality of access and opportunity.

Our teaching, learning support and associate staff are enthusiastic, committed, supportive and capable. They all work together and value each other and lifelong learning, share expertise, implement policies and lead learning so all practice is the standard of the best.

With investment via the Building Schools for the future programme our state-of-the-art building and cutting edge resources will provide a 21st Century learning environment for the whole community allowing our learners to try things they may never have thought possible.
